Hey everybody out there in cyberspace!  So, earlier today I was cruising down the information superhighway, looking for some news on this new Bing app for iPad that is causing such a ruckus.  So, I’d like to use today’s post to explore a little bit more about what is going on with this new Bing App.  Did Bing do something fresh, interesting, and new finally?  Is that possible?  Is it (gasp!) better than Google?  I suppose that ‘better than Google” might be stretching it a bit far, but it is fun, clean, and interesting; all requirements for an iPad app.  It moves well between the app and the web itself, but the app contains quite an impressive bit of info, including financial info, weather, etc. and a new section on trending topics (called “trends”).  Like the Bing page itself, the app features a large, full-color photo of whatever cool nature-type thing, but differs from the site by having a scrolling index across the bottom that categorizes all the financial & political world news, maps, etc. & other info that you could want.  I suppose that what this means is that you can read and see a lot without ever using the search bar itself, and with an iPad, that seems like a pretty good deal.
In terms of what Bing itself has to say about the new app for iPad, they say that it is a new and enriched way to search the web and that “the app is designed from the ground up for touch. You can quickly browse news, movies, Bing homepage images, local business listings and much more – all with the swipe of your finger.”  They have done an excellent job of creating an app which retains the appeal of Bing yet integrates its own usability into the functionality of iPad.
Very on point as usual, SearchEngineLand points out that this cross between a browser and an app; which begs the question: which is which? Do we need to start categorizing these things? And to what end? My guess would be that differentiation between the two is important only when we rate apps, and compare them in terms of ease of access to information.
